What colour body bag should I buy?
There is no national colour standard. Choose by specification, not colour. If your institution uses colours internally, document the rule.
How thick should a body bag be?
It depends on the use: roughly 100–150 microns for light disposable use, 150–250 for standard hospital and mortuary use, and 250 microns and above for heavy-duty, disaster and bariatric use. See our thickness guide.
Are body bags leak-proof?
Only if the complete bag – seams, zip and handles – has been designed and tested for it. Thickness alone does not guarantee it.
Are body bags required by law in South Africa?
Not for every death. GN R.363 sets specific containment requirements for certain cases, such as remains of people who died from diseases transmissible after death, and requirements for transport. Follow the regulations and your facility protocols.
Can a body bag be reused?
Disposable bags are single-use. Some coated-fabric transfer bags are designed to be cleaned and reused – follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and your infection-prevention policy.
Can a body be buried or cremated in a body bag?
Sometimes, depending on regulations, the crematorium or cemetery, and family wishes. Chlorine-free materials are preferred for cremation. Many families prefer no plastic in burials.
How many handles do I need?
Routine short transfers may need none or four; transport and disaster bags commonly have six to eight; bariatric bags often eight or more.
What size is a standard adult body bag?
Typically around 210–220 cm long and 85–90 cm wide, but check the datasheet.
How should body bags be stored?
Clean, dry, out of sunlight and away from heat, in original cartons, rotated first-in, first-out.
Do you supply outside South Africa?
Yes, across Southern Africa. Import permits and customs in the destination country are the buyer’s responsibility unless agreed otherwise.
